Mount Marty University is a private, Catholic, Benedictine, coeducational liberal arts university, which was founded in 1936. It offers associates, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees and prepares students for professional careers in over 30 fields.

Mount Marty University, which the Sisters of Saint Benedict founded in 1936, is named in memory of Martin Marty, a Benedictine missionary to the Native Americans. He came to Dakota Territory in 1876, became the Territory's first Catholic Bishop and invited the Benedictine Sisters to establish a religious community in Yankton. The college functioned as a junior college for women for 15 years. In 1951, it awarded its first Bachelor of Arts degrees and awarded its first master's degree in 1985. The college became coeducational in 1969 and founded its Watertown location in 1979. Today, Mount Marty University remains a place where students can explore their beliefs and share their faith.
