Mount Marty College and Augustana University Set Clear Path for Students Pursuing a Master of Science in Athletic Training

July 26, 2018

Exercise science students at Mount Marty College (MMC) in Yankton, South Dakota now have a direct pathway to earning their master's degree in athletic training at Augustana University (AU) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The partnership was made official on July 25, 2018, when representatives from the two institutions met on the AU campus to sign an articulation agreement. Under the agreement, students who have successfully fulfilled the necessary course and admissions requirements will be guaranteed acceptance to AU’s Athletic Training program.

The partnership is a response to nationwide changes in the field of exercise science and athletic training. “For many high-level jobs in the exercise science field, a master's degree is a requirement,” explains MMC Instructor of Exercise Science and Health, Daniel Flahie. “As undergraduate programs for athletic training are being phased out, it is increasingly important for students to have direct access to quality graduate programs, and the partnership between MMC and AU will provide that access.”

MMC’s Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, Sister Candyce Chrystal says the collaboration will enhance the student experience while it strengthens the efforts of each program. “Augustana and Mount Marty share the mission themes of faith and service; working together strengthens that common mission and provides MMC students with classes that purposefully align with Augustana’s program.”

AU’s Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Colin Irvine agrees. “This agreement is a win-win for both institutions,” says Irvine. “It provides a clear path for MMC students to pursue a master’s degree in athletic training. We are pleased to partner with MMC to make this agreement a reality.”

The agreement between MMC and AU commences this fall. For information on MMC’s majors and programs visit www.mtmc.edu. For information about AU’s academic offerings visit www.augie.edu.
