Defense Wins Championships

Imagine standing at your goal line and looking up towards the scoreboard. Your team leads by four with two seconds left and your opponents are at your own two-yard line. Then the ball is snapped, you sprint to fill your gap and you meet the running back directly and stop him short of scoring. The whistle blows and the game is over. Your whole team rushes the field because your defense has just won them the game.

This excitement is what draws many fans towards football. However, defense is not always looked at as what captivates fans. Legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant once stated, “Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships.” The conversation between defense and offense importance has been an ongoing discussion within the football community. The trend in recent years has been that offense is increasingly popular and more valued. However, there is still a dedicated group that believes that a strong defense is more important for success. A great defense can limit opposing offenses, give their offense more opportunities, and can control the tempo of the game; thus, leading to their team being more successful.

The first argument that supports defenses is that they can limit even the best opposing offenses. A common saying in football is, “If you can’t score, you can’t win.” If a defense can stop some of the best offenses that they play, they are going to have a very high chance of being very successful. In an article by Robert Buckley titled, "Is Defense or Offense More Important for Competitive Success in the National Football League,” statistics were taken over 2002 to 2004 in the NFL. Statistics like win expectancy and winning percentage were compared to offensive and defensive ranks throughout teams in the league. The conclusions were that, although not as significant as initially expected, defensive performance had a greater impact on the team’s success than that of offensive production.

Shutting down opposing offenses is not the only thing that a great defense can do for a team. Great defenses can make it easier for their offense to score more points. If they can limit the opposing offense to minimal gains, they will be able to force more punts and turnovers giving more opportunities for their own offense. This makes it so that even if team has a poor offense, their defense can provide more opportunities leading to more scoring.

Recently, many of the Super Bowl champions have been high scoring offenses. According to StatMuse, the Kansas City Chiefs have been the highest scoring offense in the NFL in the last five years. This could be easily used to argue that offense is more important, considering that the Chiefs have won three of the last six Super Bowls. However, over that same span, the Chiefs have had the highest rated defense in the NFL.  Their defense allowed the second most points as well as having one of the best rushing defenses in the NFL.

In addition to keeping the opposing team from scoring, the defense has the opportunity to control the tempo of the game. It has been increasingly popular for more teams to try and run the “No-Huddle” offense, where they get signals and plays in as fast as possible and try and run as many plays as they can in any amount of time. This can be difficult for defenses to stop because of the panic of the speed and the fatigue that hits the defense. However, the best defenses can stop this offense as well, making the opposing offense’s drives end very quickly. Because the offense is running plays so fast, if the defense stops them right away, the defense allows more time for their offense to operate.

In conclusion, defenses have been important for a long time in football even if they don’t get the recognition that they once had. Offenses are constantly trying to adjust to make it possible to be more successful. Defense will continue to shape the way football is played and will be the most important factor in games for a long time to come.
