The mission of the Mount Marty University Nursing program is to provide students with an integrated education in a Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts setting and to promote personal character development, holistic professional nursing expertise, and community service involvement.

At Mount Marty, we’ll prepare you for a variety of nursing roles, to care for an increasingly diverse population and to use complex technology. You’ll be able to work in specialties such as:

And with clinical experiences at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Mickelson Center for Neurosciences, the Yankton County Community Health Nursing Agency, area nursing homes and other community agencies, you’ll be getting hands-on experience right away. From the founding of Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in 1905 to the evolution of our first baccalaureate nursing program at Mount Marty University in 1964, we’ve been committed to educating the best nurses in the region. The baccalaureate degree program in nursing at Mount Marty University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 655 K Street NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, (202) 887-6791.
The baccalaureate degree program in nursing is approved by the South Dakota Board of Nursing.
Mount Marty University offers a BSN Bridge Program for registered and licensed practical nurses who are seeking a baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing. You may also pursue a Master of Science in Nursing, with tracks to earn a family nurse practitioner degree, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner degree, or, a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Leadership and Education. Our Sioux Falls location offers a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia degree.
Mount Marty graduates can be admitted into the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) program, located at our Sioux Falls campus, provided they meet the following requirements:
- Earned a 3.6 overall GPA from Mount Marty University.
- Earned a 3.6 GPA in sciences coursework.
- This includes nursing and other science courses.
- Completed two years as a nurse in an intensive care unit (adult or pediatric) by the time the DNAP program begins.
- Example: if a student graduates from Mount Marty in May 2025 and begins as a nurse in an intensive care unit shortly after graduating and and earning their nursing license, they can apply in summer 2026 to start the DNAP program in summer 2027.
Interested students still need to submit the application for admission through NursingCAS.

The MMU nursing program was highly rewarding and unique. Unlike many other universities, we experience clinical sites such as state correctional facilities, rural critical access hospitals and community organizations such as IMPACT.
