Avera Nursing Center
our commitment to rural healthcare
Mount Marty University's dedication to rural healthcare is stronger than ever. We are preparing the next generation of nursing professionals, at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, and it's time to give our students the next level of hands-on learning facilities.
We have a tradition of excelling in healthcare and service to others, and the renovated Avera Nursing Center and new Avera Simulation Lab will help prepare our students to be the nursing leaders our rural communities need. The Avera Nursing Center officially opened in fall 2018, and provides excellent hands-on learning opportunities for all Mount Marty nursing students.
In October, an open house was held for alumni, supporters and community members. To see photos from the event, check out our photo album on Facebook. The new high-fidelity simulation labs after also received some great local media coverage on KSFY Avera Medical Minute (Sioux Falls) and KTIV Healthbeat (Sioux City, IA).
You can make an impact
Your investment in the Mount Marty nursing program will allow the college to expand its bachelor's and master's nursing programs, providing necessary space and updated laboratories. Expanded programming will help meet the increasing need for ethical health care providers, formed in Catholic Benedictine values.

In October 2017, Avera Health announced that it will donate $1 million to Mount Marty University (MMU) to support upgrades to the Avera Science and Nursing Center on the university's Yankton campus. The gift will help fund renovations to the center’s 9600-sq.-ft. second floor. The renovation will feature a high-fidelity simulation lab to advance education for MMU’s nursing students.
Representing a community effort, the planning for the Avera Science and Nursing Center renovation and upgrade included input from EMTs around the region, Avera, and MMU alumni, faculty and staff.
One of the featured upgrades will be the addition of a nursing simulation lab. Providing flexibility for in-depth training, the simulators are mobile and may be moved to different settings, enabling MMU faculty to provide simulated, on-site training for scenarios such as athletic injuries or car accidents.
In addition to the state-of-the-art simulation lab, the renovations will include the development of display cases that will showcase the history of the MMU nursing program, dating back to the Sacred Heart School of Nursing. The historical displays will honor and celebrate MMU’s and Avera’s shared mission and history.
Construction on the Avera Nursing Center and Avera Simulation Lab are set to begin at the beginning of 2018, and the demolition process has already started. Check back often for progress updates on this exciting new project!
