Mount Marty College to Donate Time and Toiletries During Mission Day Event
September 6, 2018
*Mission Day runs from 9 a.m. until service projects are completed around 3 p.m. Students, faculty and staff will begin the day as a community with Mass in the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel at 9 a.m.
YANKTON — September 12, Mount Marty College (MMC) students, staff and faculty will take to the streets of Yankton, South Dakota for their annual Mission Day. The annual event is an opportunity for the entire MMC community to come together in a day of service. Among other events, this year’s Mission Day will feature a toiletry drive to benefit Yankton’s Banquet program.
From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. members of the MMC community will pair up and go from house to house in search of body wash, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, shampoo and toothpaste, and other essentials. All items collected will be donated to the Banquet. Yankton residents will recognize MMC community members by their MMC gear and anyone who is not home during that time, but would still like to donate, can leave their items in a bag by their front door.
Director of Campus Ministry, Jordan Foos, is the assistant director of mission for MMC and also serves on the board at the Banquet. He says the collection will be a benefit for the Banquet, and the college, “The toiletry items collected as part of the college’s larger Mission Day activities will be a great benefit to the Banquet and the guests the Banquet serves.” Foos ads that when we serve those who are often on the margins of society, we are serving Christ, “In the midst of all our academic, athletic, and co-curricular activities, Mount Marty College takes this call to be central to its mission.”
MMC's Mission Day is in its third year; since its inception, the college has donated more than 1500 hours of service to the Yankton area during the one-day event. They hope to contribute another 750 hours of service — and collect a lot of toiletries — this September 12.
